Sometimes, even when you’re following all the best baby-wearing practices, your baby might still get fussy. Here are some troubleshooting tips to help calm your little one. And make baby-wearing a more soothing experience:
1. Check for Discomfort while Baby-wearing
A fussy baby might be uncomfortable due to
- A too-tight or too-loose fit – Adjust the carrier for a snug yet breathable hold.
- Positioning – Ensure that your baby is not arching in the carrier/sling. Use pelvic tilt to correct the baby’s legs in the carrier.
- Overheating – Make sure your baby is dressed appropriately. Even consider using a lighter fabric carrier in warm weather.
- Clothing discomfort – Remove any thick or bunching layers that might be irritating your baby’s skin.
2. Adjust the Carrying Position
- Try a different position – Your baby may prefer being carried higher, lower, or in a forward-facing position if old enough.
- Ensure proper leg support – Babies should always be in an “M” position with knees above hips to prevent discomfort.
- Follow the TICKS guideline
3. Offer Movement and Soothing Techniques
- Walk around, bounce gently, or make a slight swaying motion. A movement often helps calm babies. (That’s what they have been used to in your tummy).
- Try white noise or soft music to create a soothing atmosphere.
- Gently pat or rub your baby’s back while wearing them to provide additional comfort.
4. Check for Basic Needs
Sometimes fussiness is unrelated to baby-wearing. Ask yourself:
✅ Is your baby hungry? Try feeding before or during baby-wearing.
✅ Does your baby need a diaper change? A wet or soiled diaper can make them uncomfortable.
✅ Is your baby overtired? Some babies need a few minutes to settle before they relax in the carrier.
5. Experiment with Timing
- Some babies prefer baby-wearing when they are drowsy and ready to nap.
- Others might resist being carried when they are overstimulated—try wearing them in a quieter environment.
6. Give Your Baby a Break – Practise Makes Perfect
If nothing seems to work, take a short break. Babies sometimes need a change of scenery or a little stretch before settling back in. Baby-wearing is a learned skill, so don’t despair and keep trying. You will reap the benefits. Trust us.
