Best Baby Carrier for Hot Weather in South Africa: Why I Choose Linen
If you’ve ever tried to carry your baby on a hot South African summer’s day, you’ll know that what your baby carrier is made from matters.
As a babywearing educator, one of the questions I hear from parents is:
“What is the best baby carrier for hot weather?”
My personal answer is often a pure linen ring sling.
Not because I believe there is one perfect baby carrier for every family, but because linen offers a beautiful combination of breathability, strength and comfort, while a ring sling provides a simple and adjustable way to carry your baby close.
And after more than a decade of working with baby carriers and helping parents learn to carry their babies, I have come to appreciate just how much the fabric, design and fit can influence the babywearing experience.

Why is a linen baby carrier a good choice for hot weather?
South African summers can be hot, and babywearing naturally means having two bodies close together.
Your baby is against your body, the carrier sits between you, and both of you generate heat.
This is why, when choosing a carrier for summer, I like to keep things as simple and breathable as possible.
Pure linen is one of my favourite fabrics for warm-weather babywearing.
Linen is a natural fibre known for its breathability and moisture-management properties. It is also a strong fibre, which makes it particularly interesting for a carrier that needs to provide reliable support.
A lightweight linen carrier can therefore be a lovely alternative to a carrier with multiple thick layers, heavy padding or bulky fabric.
It is important to remember that no baby carrier can make hot weather disappear. Your baby is still close to your body, so you should always consider the temperature, dress your baby appropriately, keep hydrated and avoid overheating.
But if you’re asking me which fabric I would look at first when choosing a baby carrier for hot weather, linen would be high on my list.
Why I particularly love a pure linen ring sling
There are many different types of baby carriers available today.
Structured carriers, stretchy wraps, woven wraps and ring slings can all have their place.
But for hot weather, I particularly love the simplicity of a ring sling.
A ring sling is made from a single length of fabric which is secured through two rings. Once you understand how to thread, position and tighten it correctly, you can adjust the fabric around your baby to create a close and supportive carry.
There is no large padded waistband.
There isn’t a bulky carrier panel covering your baby’s entire back.
And you don’t need several layers of fabric wrapped around your body.
Instead, you have a relatively simple piece of fabric that can be adjusted to fit you and your baby.
That simplicity is one of the reasons I recommend a linen ring sling to many parents who are looking for a summer-friendly baby carrier.
Linen is breathable — but positioning matters too
This is something I always emphasise when talking to parents about babywearing.
Choosing a breathable fabric is only part of the equation.
A carrier can be made from beautiful linen, but if your baby isn’t positioned correctly, you haven’t achieved the supportive carry you’re looking for.
With a correctly fitted ring sling, the fabric can be adjusted around your baby so that their body is well supported and their thighs are supported in an appropriate position.
For an upright carry, we want to see baby’s knees higher than their bottom, with the fabric supporting the thighs.
This is commonly referred to as the “M” position.

This is one of the reasons I don’t like to describe baby carriers simply as “good” or “bad”.
The carrier is only part of the equation.
The way it is adjusted and used is equally important.
A ring sling allows you to adjust the fit around your baby
One of the things I love most about ring slings is their adjustability.
Instead of putting your baby into a predetermined carrier panel, you use the fabric to create the support around your baby’s body.
You can tighten the fabric section by section, allowing you to achieve a close, supportive fit.
For a parent who is new to babywearing, this can take a little practice.
And that’s completely normal.
I often tell parents:
Babywearing is a learned skill.
Your first attempt doesn’t have to be perfect.
Once you understand where the fabric should sit, how to tighten it and what your baby’s positioning should look like, the process becomes much more intuitive.
What does ergonomic babywearing actually mean?
The word “ergonomic” gets used a lot when talking about baby carriers.
But what are we actually looking for?
For me, ergonomic babywearing is about creating a position that appropriately supports your baby’s developing body while also creating a comfortable, supportive fit for the wearer.
In an upright carry, that means looking at the baby’s overall position rather than focusing on one feature of the carrier.
I want to see:
- Baby positioned high and close enough to the wearer to be monitored easily
- The baby’s airway clear
- The fabric supporting the baby’s body appropriately
- The thighs supported
- Knees positioned higher than the bottom
- Baby comfortably and securely supported
- The carrier adjusted so that the wearer is also comfortable
A ring sling can achieve this beautifully when it is correctly fitted and used.
That is why learning how to use your sling is just as important as choosing the sling itself.

Linen and ring slings are a particularly lovely combination.
Linen is strong enough to provide support while remaining relatively lightweight, and a ring sling uses the fabric in a simple single-layer configuration.
That means you don’t necessarily need lots of additional structure to create a supportive carry.
The fabric does much of the work.
And as linen is used and washed, it can become beautifully soft and comfortable.
This is one of the things I love about a good linen sling: it can become something that feels familiar to you and your baby rather than something you simply “put on”.
It becomes part of your everyday routine.
What should you wear when babywearing in hot weather?
Choosing a breathable carrier is important, but what you and your baby wear underneath it matters too.
On a hot day, I recommend keeping clothing light and breathable.
Remember that your baby is already receiving warmth from your body and the carrier.
You don’t necessarily need to dress your baby in several layers.
And don’t forget yourself.

Also pay attention to the environment.
If temperatures are extremely high, take breaks from babywearing, seek shade and keep both yourself and your baby hydrated.
The carrier should never be used as a reason to keep baby in the heat for longer than is comfortable.

One of the reasons ring slings are so useful is their longevity.
A correctly used ring sling can be suitable for babies from the newborn stage through toddlerhood, depending on the specific sling’s safety specifications and the child’s development.

Is the fabric appropriate for our climate?
Can I achieve a good fit for my baby?
Can I adjust the carrier as my baby grows?
Will I actually enjoy wearing it?
And perhaps most importantly:
Do I know how to use it correctly?
A beautiful carrier is only useful if you feel confident putting your baby into it.
